Alfama owes its beauty to its medieval alleys and breathtaking views. It is the only part of the city that survived the 1755 earthquake, so a walk through its sloping roads gives you an image of what old Lisbon must have been like.

The precious “crown” of the hill of Alfama is Castelo de São Jorge (Saint George Castle). Its oldest parts date back to the 6th century AD meaning that its walls incorporate a large part of Lisbon history, like the times of the Visigoths and the Moors. From the castle you can get an amazing view of the city.

Walking through Alfama you'll get to see other interesting sights as well, such as the Sé Cathedral, which is the city's oldest building, and Casa dos Bicos, an odd 16th century building that is worth paying a visit.
