Seville Cathedral

Seville Cathedral

Seville is the artistic, cultural, and financial capital of southern Spain. Its rich history offers  a mixture of Christian and Islamic influences that are undeniably present in the city’s architecture.

Food, music and fiestas also make this city one of the most enchanting places in Europe.

Below are what we consider to be the top seven wonders and of Seville:

Seville Cathedral
With its 116 meters long and 76 wide, the Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral and catholic cathedral in the world. In 1987 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Real Alcázar
It’s a collection of palatial buildings and spectacular interior gardens constructed since the early Middle Ages. The compound is used as a place of accommodation of the members of the royal family and heads of state visiting the city.

Giralda Tower
It was originally a minaret. The beautiful structure became the bell tower of Seville Cathedral after the Reconquista and it dominates the city’s skyline.

Torre del Oro (Gold Tower)
It was part of the last wall of defence that ran from the Alcázar to the Guadalquivier river. It is said that it gained its name from the sun’s reflection on its gold tiles that once covered the dome.

Semana Santa Fiestas
This is the celebration that defines the citie’s own idiosyncrasies, it embodies the spirit of the Seville.

April Fair
This is one of the most international and popular of Seville’s fiestas. Food, horses, parades, traditional costumes, bulls and flamenco all come together at Sevilla’s April Fair

Bullfighting
This is a tradition that goes as far as ancient Greece. The Maestranza bullring is perhaps the best venue in all of Spain to watch a corrida.

If you have any other suggestions feel free to add them to the list, after all there are plenty of other amazing sites to visit in Seville. Olé!

Flamenco dancers in Seville

Flamenco dancers in Seville

If you’re visiting Spain for the first time, and Sevilla is of course one of your (many) stops, then you know you cannot miss to watch an authentic flamenco show while you are there.

Flamenco is a passionate and mysterious art form that originated in Andalucía, in the south of Spain. It is a mixture of cultures: Arabic, Andalusian, Sephardic and Gypsy styles, they all play a role in creating this wonderful melody.

Nowadays, this genre has derived into many variations and types, like “flamenco-fusions”, “flamenco-rock”, “new flamenco” and many others.

Sevilla offers a wide variety of bars, restaurants, theaters and tablaos where you can enjoy a flamenco performance.

Below are some interesting suggestions where you can surely enjoy a great flamenco show:

The art of…fainting?

Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral

Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral

Ah Florence! This romantic Italian paradise is one of the most beloved cities in the world. It represents the birthplace of the Renaissance, the famous cultural revolution that paid homage to the spirit of ancient Greece. It’s the home of Dante, Michelangelo, Machiavelli and the Medici, just to name a few.

Its countless breathtaking works of art can be found in every corner on the old city and the beautiful architecture is full of rich history: museums, cathedrals, galleries and ancient buildings all tell a story of greater times. This is paradise for all the art lovers.

And if you are in fact an art lover, you know you can’t miss the famous Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. The Duomo is one of the most impressive works of art of all times. This cathedral, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and it was considered a symbol of wealth and power of the Tuscan capital.

But beware of the Duomo’s mesmerizing beauty – or any of the magnificent architectural structures for that matter-. If you let yourself be overpowered by the greatness and beauty of any work of art, you can suffer from “Stendhal’s Syndrome”. This rare illness was named after the famous French author Stendhal (1783 -1842), when, visiting the Church of Santa Croce, was dazzled by its beauty and was unable to walk.

Florentine doctors treat hundreds of cases each year of people who experience rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion and even hallucination in some cases when being exposed to art.

Sounds crazy, right? But this rare condition can also be suffered in the natural world, when witnessing any of mother nature’s wonders (and I’m not referring to the 7 Wonders of Nature).

So be careful when visiting Florence for the first time, it could take your breath away, literally!

Indian Summer in Barcelona

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

This past weekend we enjoyed the last few days of “warm” temperatures and finally said goodbye to clear skyes and bright shinny days.

Playa-de-la-Barceloneta

Playa de la Barceloneta

This unusual rise of temperature during the last days of autumn season is commonly known as “Veranillo de San Martin” or “Indian Summer”. During this period, temperatures can go as high as almost 30C (in some areas of Southern Spain). Barcelona was rewarded with a great sunny weather of up to 25C, like a breath of fresh air…

Saturday and Sunday afternoon, tourists and locals decided to leave their coats and scarves at home and headed down to the beach to chill, take a nap, or have a Mojito and relax in one of the many “chiringuitos”.

So now we are back to normal, cool cloudy days are starting to settle in and winter is coming at full speed.

Just one simple advice, take a lot of Vitamin C, you wouldn´t want to welcome winter with a runny nose and a headache, like me.

Park Güell not free anymore?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

A few days ago I heard the news that the Barcelona City Council is considering to start charging an admission fee to enter Gaudi´s Park Güell.

The neighbors in the area have decided to speak up and complain, so the issue is now under discussion. This beautiful garden complex was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and built in the early 1900’s. Nowadays, the park receives an average of 14,000 tourists every day. More that 4,000,000 visits per year!

Park Güell

Park Güell

They haven’t yet decided on the price of the ticket or when they would lunch the iniciative, but the main reason for this fee is to alleviate the high maintenance costs and to have better control over who enters the parc, discouraging sneaky pickpocketers from prowling around the area looking for innocent victims.

Overall, the cost of maintaining the park and its gardens in perfect condition is costing the city between 600,000 and 700,000 per year, not counting the extra costs for unforseeable damages.

In my opinion it’s a good initiative. After all, the park should be an enjoyable place to be, not a dirty, crowded and dangerous space to seek fictitious relaxation.

Check out more information on Park Güell.
